Things went from bad to worse for Luis Severino during his outing Wednesday, which has the pitcher feeling down about his performance for the New York Yankees.

"I'm just having the worst year of my life in baseball," Severino said, according to SNY's Phillip Martinez. "I have to continue. I'm not going to stop here. I'm just going to try and get better."

The Yankees used an opener instead of letting Severino start Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox due to the pitcher's 13.85 ERA in the first inning.

However, the strategy didn't pay off. Severino allowed four earned runs on five hits over two innings after Ian Hamilton made easy work of the first frame.

"I thought it was a good idea (to bring me out of the bullpen)," Severino said.

"I've been having some troubles in the first inning, and they were trying to bring me out in the second inning to see if something happens. It didn't happen. But like I said, I'm going to keep working to get better."

Severino has struggled for the Yankees in 2023, posting career-worst numbers in ERA (8.06), FIP (6.64), WHIP (1.88), and K/9 (7.9).

The two-time All-Star has been particularly bad in recent performances. He's allowed 36 earned runs in seven outings since the beginning of July, including three games in which he gave up seven or more earned runs.

Severino is a free agent at the end of this season. The Yankees continue to play with a depleted rotation, with starters Carlos Rodon, Frankie Montas, and Luis Gil injured. Domingo German is also out for the remainder of the campaign while seeking treatment for alcohol abuse.
