The St. Louis Cardinals are eyeing Seattle Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert, a source told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

However, it's unclear what the Mariners would want in return from the Cardinals in a trade, notes Goold.

Gilbert, who's under team control through the 2027 campaign, would be a long-term solution for a St. Louis club that's projected to have three openings in its rotation next season.

The price tag for the 26-year-old would likely be steep since he isn't arbitration-eligible until 2024. He's also performed on the mound, authoring a career 3.75 ERA with 1.12 WHIP and 8.9 K/9 over 413 1/3 innings (74 starts) since debuting in 2021.

There's been no indication the Mariners are willing to part with one of their top starting pitchers ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline. Seattle enters Friday's action four games out of the final AL wild-card spot and six behind the division-leading Texas Rangers.

Meanwhile, the NL Central-dwelling Cardinals have received interest from contending teams about right-hander Jack Flaherty, according to Goold.

Left-hander Jordan Montgomery and relievers Jordan Hicks, Ryan Helsley, and Genesis Cabrera are reportedly available on the trade market. Flaherty, Montgomery, and Hicks are all free agents after this season.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak has already said his club is "going to trade people" with a focus on 2024.
