Red Sox move Sale to 60-day IL with shoulder injury
The Boston Red Sox transferred left-hander Chris Sale to the 60-day injured list due to a stress reaction in his shoulder blade, the team announced Friday.
The injury won't require surgery, but Sale will miss three-to-four weeks before the next steps are determined, according to The Athletic's Chad Jennings. The earliest Sale can return is Aug. 2, per MLB.com's Ian Browne.
Boston placed Sale on the 15-day IL on June 2 with shoulder inflammation after he exited his last start early. The 34-year-old, who'd been pitching well, said he felt disheartened.
"I hate feeling like this," Sale said June 2. "I started having fun playing baseball again. Now I'm back to not having fun, and that sucks."
The seven-time All-Star has been hampered by constant injuries, limiting him to 22 starts since 2020.
Boston reinstated outfielder Adam Duvall, selected pitcher Joe Jacques, optioned Enmanuel Valdez, and designated left-hander Matt Dermody for assignment in corresponding moves.
