New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso was removed from Wednesday's game against the Atlanta Braves after being hit in the wrist by a pitch.
The Mets announced that X-rays on Alonso's left wrist came back negative. He was diagnosed with a wrist contusion and is day-to-day. Alonso will also get a CT scan on Thursday, manager Buck Showalter said postgame, according to Newsday's Tim Healey.
"We'll see how sore he is tomorrow," Showalter said. "The initial X-ray was good but we're going to make sure we know what we're dealing with tomorrow."
Braves starter Charlie Morton's 97-mph fastball ran in on Alonso, who fell to the ground in pain. He left the game moments later after being examined by trainers.
Tommy Pham pinch-ran for Alonso and took over in left field, while Mark Canha shifted to first base.
Alonso, the majors' home-run leader, drew the ire of some in Atlanta when microphones caught him taunting Braves pitcher Bryce Elder following his homer in Tuesday's game.
The 28-year-old is hitting .231/.326/.546 with 22 homers and 49 RBIs in 62 games for the Mets this season.
