Angels commit 2 errors in 10th, waste Ohtani outing in loss to Marlins

The Los Angeles Angels were the architects of their own misfortune Saturday against the Miami Marlins.

Tied 4-4 with one out in the top of the tenth inning with runners on first and second, Angels left fielder Mickey Moniak bobbled a deep fly ball from Marlins pinch hitter Garrett Cooper. Luis Arraez scored from second to make it 5-4 for the visitors.

"I make that play nine times out of 10, and unfortunately, it happened in the 10th inning, and it cost us," Moniak said, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. "I'll take full blame on that one. I think that loss falls on me. It's tough. I think we most certainly could've won that game if I make that play."

The Angels then intentionally walked Jon Berti to load the bases. Marlins catcher Jacob Stallings followed by hitting a ground ball to Angels reliever Jaime Barria, who fired it home to get the force out before Matt Thaiss threw to first to complete the double play. Inning over? Not so fast, with replays showing Thaiss didn't touch home plate.

Garrett Hampson then laced a two-run double to make it 8-4 for the Marlins. The Angels would get a consolation run in the bottom half of the 10th on a Gio Urshela RBI single, but it was all for naught as the Halos slumped to a second straight defeat against Miami.

"We made plenty of other mistakes that cost us tonight," Angels manager Phil Nevin added, downplaying the costly gaffes in the final frame. "Three leadoff hitters get on and score, one from an error, one from a walk, one from an 0-2 count, and we couldn't finish it off. All three of those leadoff hitters scored, and that hurts."

Angels starter Shohei Ohtani gave up just one earned run and racked up 10 strikeouts across six innings on the mound. However, he went hitless at the plate and was 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
