Twins' Mahle to undergo Tommy John surgery
Minnesota Twins right-hander Tyler Mahle will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, manager Rocco Baldelli said Thursday, according to MLB.com's Do-Hyoung Park.
Mahle was placed on the injured list at the end of April with a posterior impingement and flexor pronator strain in his pitching elbow.
"It's part of the game; it happens," Mahle said, according to the Star Tribune's Phil Miller. "It's very disappointing."
The Twins acquired Mahle in a deal with the Cincinnati Reds at last season's trade deadline. The 28-year-old is scheduled to reach free agency at the conclusion of the 2023 campaign.
"I wish I was able to contribute like I thought I would, like the team thought I would when they traded for me," Mahle said.
Mahle was off to a strong start this season, registering a 3.16 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 28 strikeouts across 25 2/3 innings.
The Twins are also without the services of Kenta Maeda in the starting rotation. Maeda is on the injured list with a strained right triceps. The Twins have turned to right-handers Bailey Ober and Louie Varland to take the spots of Mahle and Maeda in the rotation.
