Former Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain is calling it a career following a 13-year run in the majors, according to Andy McCullough of The Athletic.

"I left it in the hands of my boys," Cain said. "I said, 'Hey, do you guys want daddy to continue to play ball? Or are you ready for daddy to be done and go home?' And they said, 'Dad, we want you to go home.' And I said, 'OK, then.' So I've been done. I just haven't announced it, I guess."

Cain will have an official retirement ceremony as a member of the Royals at some point this season. The 36-year-old said May is a tentative date for the event.

The two-time All-Star played for Kansas City for seven seasons, which included a World Series title in 2015. He was an MVP finalist that year and also picked up ALCS MVP honors.

"He's going to be a Royal Hall of Famer," Kansas City general manager JJ Picollo said. "Just the times that he rose to the occasion speaks volumes about what type of competitor he was."

Cain left the Royals to join the Brewers on a five-year, $80-million contract in January 2018.

He finishes his career with a .283/.343/.407 slash line with 87 homers, 454 RBIs, and 190 stolen bases over 1,172 games. The former Gold Glover also accumulated the fourth-most defensive runs saved out of any outfielder in baseball during his time in the big leagues.
