Matt Holliday's tenure as St. Louis Cardinals bench coach was short-lived.

The former player resigned from his position on Oliver Marmol's 2023 staff and was replaced by Joe McEwing, the Cardinals announced Thursday.

"When it came down to it, I just didn't want to miss all the things with my kids," Holliday said, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"In theory, four months out, it seemed like something I wanted. As it got closer, I just felt like I stopped playing (in the majors) because I didn't want to miss all the things you miss. When you say 'yes' to something, you say 'no' to something else."

Holliday joined the Cardinals as bench coach in November. The 42-year-old spent eight of his 15 big-league playing seasons with the Cardinals, appearing in four All-Star Games.

McEwing, 50, played one full season with the Cardinals in 1999. He recently coached in the Chicago White Sox organization.
