Report: Mets sign former All-Star Narvaez to 1-year, $8M deal
The New York Mets and former All-Star catcher Omar Narvaez have agreed to a one-year deal that includes a 2024 player option, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
The deal will reportedly pay Narvaez $8 million in 2023 with the player option promising an additional $7 million, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
Narvaez, 30, spent the last three seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers where he became a first-time All-Star in 2021. He hit .233/.318/.350 with 17 homers over 247 games during his tenure with the Brew Crew. He ranked in the 89th percentile in catcher framing last year, according to Baseball Savant.
The lefty-hitting backstop joins a Mets roster that already includes James McCann and Tomas Nido vying for starts behind the dish.
McCann is entering the third season of a four-year, $40.6-million deal he initially signed before the 2021 season. The 32-year-old really struggled last year, posting a .538 OPS (55 OPS+).
Nido, meanwhile, became the de facto starter behind the plate, posting a .600 OPS (72 OPS+) while starring defensively. He ranked in the 93rd percentile by catcher framing.
