Report: Mets, Kodai Senga agree to 5-year, $75M deal
The New York Mets and free-agent right-hander Kodai Senga agreed on a five-year, $75-million contract, pending a physical, according to Andy Martino of SNY.
The 29-year-old is coming off a career year in Nippon Professional Baseball, posting a 1.89 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 148 innings while playing for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.
Senga's contract contains no-trade provisions and an opt-out clause that allows him to re-enter free agency following the 2025 campaign, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. At that time, Senga will have played three years in MLB and would be entering his age-33 season.
The Japanese ace was one of the most sought-after free agents on the pitching market, generating varied reported interest from the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Senga is the latest marquee signing in what has been a busy offseason for the Mets, who have already landed Justin Verlander, Jose Quintana, and David Robertson while retaining Brandon Nimmo and Edwin Diaz.
