Twins trade Urshela to Angels
The Minnesota Twins traded infielder Gio Urshela to the Los Angeles Angels for minor-league right-hander Alejandro Hidalgo, the teams announced Friday.
Urshela hit .285/.338/.429 with 13 home runs, 27 doubles, and 64 RBIs in 144 games for the Twins after they acquired him from the New York Yankees before the beginning of last season.
The versatile infielder is expected to play multiple positions for the Angels.
"We look at (Urshela) as an everyday player that can move around and play a lot of different spots," Angels GM Perry Minasian said, according to the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher.
"I think we saw last year where there were certain times where it was challenging when we had injuries, multiple injuries, in the infield. We didn’t necessarily love the options we were putting out there on a daily basis."
The 31-year-old is projected to earn $9.2 million in his final year of arbitration before he becomes a free agent.
Hidalgo went 0-3 with a 4.62 ERA and 13.4 K/9 in 10 Single-A starts in 2022. The 19-year-old has a plus changeup with an average fastball velocity of 92 mph, according to The Athletic's Dan Hayes.
