Phillies storm back to beat Padres, take 3-1 lead in NLCS
The Philadelphia Phillies are one win away from reaching the World Series after defeating the San Diego Padres 10-6 in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series.
The Phillies put 10 runs on the board Saturday to overturn a 4-0 deficit after left-hander Bailey Falter started the game and failed to get out of the first inning. The result is tied for the largest comeback postseason win in their franchise history, according to Fox Sports.
Philadelphia chased Padres starter Mike Clevinger before he could record an out in the bottom half of the opening frame.
"This was probably one of the worst days of my life," Clevinger said of his rough outing, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers. "That sums it up. It sucks."
It was just the second time in postseason history that neither starter made it out of the first, according to MLB.com's Sarah Langs.
Rhys Hoskins hit two home runs for the Phillies, who also received round-trippers from Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, as well as a two-RBI night from Bryce Harper.
Philadelphia trailed 6-4 in the fifth inning following a two-run homer from Juan Soto, but it quickly recovered in the bottom half before jumping out to a lead for good.
"We have a lot of confidence in ourselves," Schwarber said of wiping out the two deficits. "We've done that quite a few times throughout this year, and when you can draw back on experience and believe that you can do it, the mind is a powerful thing."
The Padres are one of just three teams to ever lose in the postseason after scoring four or more runs in the first inning.

Additionally, there have now been four comeback wins in the 2022 postseason from teams that trailed by four or more runs in a game. This is the most during a single postseason in Major League Baseball history.
Game 5 of the NLDS takes place Sunday in Philadelphia at 2:37 p.m. ET.
Zack Wheeler will start for the Phillies, with Yu Darvish taking the hill for the Padres.
