Report: Optimism Padres sign Musgrove to extension this week
The San Diego Padres and right-hander Joe Musgrove's representatives recently resumed discussions about a long-term contract, and there's optimism the sides could reach an agreement this week, sources told the San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee.
The 29-year-old has indicated that he doesn't want negotiations to continue through the remainder of the season and is open to testing free agency following the 2022 campaign, according to Acee.
Musgrove reportedly rejected an eight-year extension offer from the Padres in April that would have paid him in the range of $11 million per season.
San Diego acquired Musgrove from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-team deal before the 2021 campaign.
After posting a 3.18 ERA in 31 starts last year, Musgrove has taken his game to another level this season. He owns an 8-2 record with a 2.42 ERA and is set to make his first career All-Star Game appearance.
