Report: Padres' Musgrove rejected 8-year extension offer

The San Diego Padres' attempts to lock up pitcher Joe Musgrove aren't off to a great start.

Musgrove - a pending free agent - and the Padres appear to be at an impasse following early-season extension negotiations, sources told Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

The Padres' last offer to Musgrove, which he apparently declined, was an eight-year extension in the range of $11 million per season, Rosenthal and Lin report.

Musgrove, who's in his final season of arbitration and earning $8.625 million, is undoubtedly seeking a substantial raise on that figure. Should he reach free agency, he'll be one of the most sought-after names in a deep group of starters that could also include the likes of Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander, and Noah Syndergaard, among others.

A native of the San Diego area, Musgrove has emerged as one of the Padres' best pitchers since arriving via trade before last season. Last April, he became a franchise icon in just his second start with the club by throwing the Padres' first no-hitter in their 52-year history.

The 29-year-old is off to a tremendous start this season, having won three of his four outings while issuing just two walks in 25 innings thus far.
