Phillies' Harper fractures thumb on HBP from Snell

Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper fractured his left thumb after being hit by a pitch Saturday, the team announced.

The Phillies placed Harper on the injured list Sunday and recalled outfielder Mickey Moniak to take the star slugger's spot on the active roster.

Harper will be further evaluated in the next few days, at which point the Phillies will have a better idea of how much time he'll miss, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

"I'm hopeful he'll be back at some point (this season)," Dombrowski added, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic.

The reigning National League MVP was drilled by San Diego Padres starter Blake Snell's 97-mph fastball that came up and in, narrowly missing his face. Harper was tended to by Phillies trainers while in intense pain.

Johan Camargo pinch-ran for Harper and remained in the game as Philadelphia's designated hitter.

Harper, who missed time last year after being hit in the face, entered Saturday's game hitting .320/.385/.602 with 15 homers and 48 RBIs this season.

His injury is an enormous blow to the Phillies, who came into Saturday sitting only three games out of a playoff spot despite inconsistent play all season.
