White Sox DFA Keuchel nearing end of $55.5M deal
Infielder Danny Mendick was recalled in a corresponding move.
Keuchel, 34, struggled to start the season, authoring a 7.88 ERA and 6.20 FIP over eight starts.
The former AL Cy Young winner is in the final guaranteed season of a three-year, $55.5-million deal that includes a $20-million team option for 2023. He will be owed the remainder of his $18-million salary for this campaign plus a $1.5-million buyout.
Keuchel, a two-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, was excellent in his first season with the club, posting a 1.99 ERA and 3.08 FIP over 63 1/3 innings during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
The ground ball expert has regressed since then, owning a 5.71 ERA and 5.39 FIP that includes his 162 innings last year.
Keuchel claimed AL Cy Young honors in 2015 as a member of the Houston Astros after leading the Junior Circuit with 20 wins, 232 innings, and an impressive 1.02 WHIP.
