New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday, according to The Athletic's Lindsey Adler.

Gil suffered the injury during his start on Wednesday for the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate.

The 23-year-old made just one appearance for the Yankees this season, allowing four runs and notching five strikeouts across four innings against the Chicago White Sox on May 12.

Gil put together a strong campaign in 2021, registering a 3.07 ERA and 11.66 K/9 in 29 1/3 innings pitched.
