The New York Yankees and San Diego Padres had trade discussions for outfielder Joey Gallo during the spring, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

New York was looking for a return in line with Gallo's past achievements and not the performance he's shown since he was acquired by the Yankees in a trade with the Texas Rangers last July, Heyman adds.

In 70 games with the Bronx Bombers, the 28-year-old is hitting a paltry .154/.296/.362 with 13 home runs and 22 RBIs.

Gallo is off to a rough start in 2022, registering a .378 OPS without a homer or RBI in his first 39 plate appearances; he was left on the bench for New York's game Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers.

"I’m not playing well enough to be in the starting lineup every day," Gallo said, according to Dan Martin of the New York Post. "I understand that."

Despite a rocky start to his Yankees career, manager Aaron Boone's belief in Gallo hasn't wavered.

"I still trust he’s gonna be good for us," Boone said. "I have a ton of confidence in what he can and will do for us."

Boone added he thought Gallo was "pressing," which is why he kept him on the bench.

The two-time All-Star is back in the Yankees' lineup batting sixth and playing left field for Thursday's series finale in Detroit.
