Report: Villar agrees to join Cubs on 1-year, $6M deal

The Chicago Cubs and infielder Jonathan Villar agreed on a one-year, $6-million contract, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

The deal also reportedly includes performance bonuses and a mutual option for 2023.

Villar hit .249/.322/.416 with 18 home runs, 42 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases in 142 games last season with the New York Mets.

The 30-year-old brings a versatile glove to Chicago. He appeared in 97 contests at third base, 26 at shortstop, and nine at second base in 2021.

Villar will likely see time at all three positions for the Cubs. The team recently signed shortstop Andrelton Simmons and have second baseman Nick Madrigal and third baseman Patrick Wisdom already on the roster.

Villar owns a career .258/.326/.403 slash line with 98 home runs, 325 RBIs, and 232 stolen bases. He's also made stops with the Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore Orioles, Miami Marlins, and Toronto Blue Jays.
