The Los Angeles Angels are stuck in a holding pattern regarding the finalization of their 2022 coaching staff because one person they're interested in hiring remains part of the players' union.

Adam Eaton, who appeared in 25 games with the Angels last season before being released in August, is drawing interest from the team for a position on Joe Maddon's coaching staff, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Los Angeles discussed a coaching opportunity with Eaton before the Dec. 1 lockout, but the organization is unable to finalize a deal during the work stoppage since he's still part of the MLBPA, according to Rosenthal's sources.

Eaton hasn't officially retired, and there is no guarantee he will accept a coaching job with the Angels, but he is considering it.

The players' union does not agree with MLB adding Eaton to a list of free agents covered by the lockout because L.A. released him in August, and he hasn't been employed in the league since. Meanwhile, MLB believes he's covered because he became a free agent under the now-expired collective bargaining agreement.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a solid 10-year career with the Angels, Chicago White Sox, Washington Nationals, and Arizona Diamondbacks. The 2019 World Series winner owns a career .276/.354/.409 slash line with 66 home runs, 46 triples, 319 RBIs, and 87 steals.

In addition to potentially hiring Eaton, the Angels are expected to add Phil Nevin, Benji Gil, and Bill Hasselman as coaches on Maddon's staff, reports Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
