Mariners acquire Anderson from Pirates after Phillies trade falls through

The Seattle Mariners acquired left-handed starter Tyler Anderson from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor-league catcher Carter Bins and right-hander Joaquin Tejada, the team announced Tuesday.

The Pirates reportedly agreed to send the southpaw to the Philadelphia Phillies earlier Tuesday, but that trade fell through due to a medical review of a player going to Pittsburgh, a source told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Anderson, 31, is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 103 1/3 innings with Pittsburgh this year. He'll be a free agent at the end of the season.

It's the second Mariners trade made Tuesday after Seattle acquired infielder Abraham Toro and right-hander Joe Smith from the Houston Astros for closer Kendall Graveman and reliever Rafael Montero.

That deal was reportedly not received well in Seattle's clubhouse, but general manager Jerry Dipoto said more moves are in the works.

“This is the first move in what should be a succession of moves over the course of this week that I think will result in the present team looking deeper, and the future team looking deeper, and that’s been the goal throughout," Dipoto said of the Graveman trade, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.
