Report: Mets among teams interested in Cubs' Bryant
The New York Mets are one of multiple teams showing interest in Chicago Cubs All-Star Kris Bryant, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
It's not known how advanced talks between the sides might be, or which other clubs are interested in the 2016 NL MVP.
Bryant is one of the top position players available at this year's trade deadline. But he's also a pending free agent and may only go to his next team as a two-month rental.
The 29-year-old is enjoying a renaissance season with Chicago, hitting .271/.353/.502 with 16 home runs and 46 RBIs across 329 plate appearances. The natural third baseman has turned himself into a very versatile player this year, starting 10 or more games at five different positions, including all three outfield spots.
Bryant would give the injury-riddled Mets an additional right-handed power bat who can play multiple positions.
The Mets have long been interested in Bryant and were connected to him during the offseason after acquiring shortstop Francisco Lindor from Cleveland.
Chicago is likely to deal several pending free agents ahead of the July 30 trade deadline. The North Siders' fire sale kicked off Thursday when outfielder Joc Pederson was traded to Atlanta.
