Report: MLB upholds 10-game ban of M's Santiago for foreign substance
Major League Baseball upheld its 10-game suspension of Seattle Mariners left-hander Hector Santiago for using a foreign substance, sources told Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.
MLB issued the ban late last month after Santiago was ejected from a game against the Chicago White Sox on June 27 when umpires determined he had a sticky substance on and inside his glove during an inspection.
The southpaw appealed the suspension, stating he only used rosin, which is an approved substance to help pitchers with their grip.
Santiago is so far the only player to be suspended by MLB under the league's new initiative to crack down on the application of foreign substances.
The 33-year-old has primarily come out of Seattle's bullpen this season. He's 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 24 1/3 innings.
