German Marquez came so close to conquering Coors Field.

The Colorado Rockies right-hander lost his no-hit bid in the ninth inning when Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder Ka'ai Tom laced a leadoff single.

Tom was quickly erased on a double play. Marquez then completed a one-hit, 92-pitch shutout, and the Rockies won 8-0.

The right-hander struck out five batters and walked one, allowing just three baserunners and inducing 12 ground-ball outs. He also chipped in offensively, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Marquez was trying to throw what would have been MLB's record-tying eighth no-hitter this season. The seven no-hitters thus far in 2021 are tied as the modern-era (since 1901) mark.

Marquez's gem was the majors' first shutout thrown on fewer than 100 pitches since 2019. It's just the second such game at Coors Field along with Colorado's Aaron Cook on July 1, 2008, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

Coors Field, a notoriously hitter-friendly ballpark thanks to Denver's high altitude, has played host to just one no-hitter, thrown by the Los Angeles Dodgers' Hideo Nomo in 1996. The Rockies' lone no-no belongs to Ubaldo Jimenez, who did it at Atlanta in 2010.

The Pirates, meanwhile, avoided being no-hit for the 14th time in franchise history.
