Alonso joins crowded Mets IL with right hand sprain
The New York Mets placed first baseman Pete Alonso on the 10-day injured list with a right hand sprain, the team announced Friday.
Right-handed reliever Tommy Hunter also hit the IL with lower back pain. Both moves are retroactive to May 19.
In corresponding moves, the beleaguered Mets recalled right-hander Yennsy Diaz and selected the contract of utility man Brandon Drury.
The 2019 NL Rookie of the Year joins a crowded injured list for the Mets, which already includes Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, J.D. Davis, Kevin Pillar, Albert Almora Jr., and Luis Guillorme. Alonso, 26, had been sidelined since Wednesday with a left wrist ailment.
Prior to his hand injury, he was hitting .236/.336/.433 with six homers and 12 RBIs over 36 games.
