Mariners' Paxton to have season-ending surgery

Seattle Mariners left-hander James Paxton will undergo season-ending surgery, Mariners manager Scott Servais announced Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Corey Brock.

Servais didn't specify what type of procedure Paxton will have, but Tommy John surgery was reportedly recommended to the southpaw last week. Paxton could miss the entire 2021 campaign and likely part of the 2022 season should he undergo Tommy John surgery.

The Mariners placed Paxton on the 10-day injured list with a left forearm strain on April 7, one day after he was removed from his season debut following 24 pitches.

Paxton signed a one-year, $8.5-million deal with the Mariners after making five starts for the New York Yankees in 2020. The 32-year-old missed most of last season because of an elbow injury.
