Marlins name Alcantara as Opening Day starter

The Miami Marlins named right-hander Sandy Alcantara as the Opening Day starter on Thursday, according to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola.

Alcantara has been terrific for the Marlins during spring training, striking out 19 hitters in 12 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. The 25-year-old struck out nine in five innings against the New York Mets on Wednesday.

The Dominican hurler was 3-2 with a 3.00 ERA and 3.71 FIP in 42 innings for the Marlins last season.

The one-time All-Star is 11-19 with a 3.71 ERA in 53 career outings, which includes 45 starts.

Miami hosts the Tampa Bay Rays on April 1. Tyler Glasnow will start for the Rays.
