New York Mets team president Sandy Alderson wants to sign outfielder Michael Conforto and shortstop Francisco Lindor to long-term deals, and he says discussions with both players will begin soon.
"We've had Conforto for many years. He's not only become an excellent player, but also part of the leadership group within the clubhouse," Alderson said on Monday, according to SNY. "He's represented the Mets for a long period of time and represented us well. And I think if it's possible that we will make the effort to try and keep Michael with us.
"With respect to Lindor, we made the trade. That doesn't mean necessarily we are guaranteed to have him long-term. But I think we're committed to talking about it. And I expect those conversations will start relatively soon in both cases."
While there doesn't appear to be any rush to sign Conforto, Lindor's situation is a different story. The four-time All-Star recently said he doesn't want contract talks to become a distraction during the season, and he wants discussions to wrap up before Opening Day.
Conforto and Lindor are both eligible for free agency at the end of the campaign, and they would be among some of the best players available.
The 28-year-old Conforto hit .322/.412/.515 with nine home runs, 12 doubles, and 31 RBIs over 54 games last season. He owns an .843 OPS (128 OPS+) in six seasons with the Mets after they drafted him 10th overall in 2014.
Meanwhile, Lindor has cemented himself as one of the game's brightest stars, winning two Silver Slugger awards and two Gold Gloves while with the Cleveland Indians.
The dynamic 27-year-old has recorded a .285/.346/.488 career slash line with 138 home runs, 411 RBIs, and 99 steals over six seasons.
In addition to Conforto and Lindor, Alderson mentioned right-hander Noah Syndergaard - another impending free agent - is also an extension candidate.
The 28-year-old is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is expected to rejoin the Mets this summer.
