The Toronto Blue Jays signed right-hander David Phelps to a one-year contract, the team announced Thursday.

Phelps' deal will pay him $1.75 million in 2021, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN, who adds the reliever can earn another $750,000 in performance bonuses.

The 34-year-old pitched for the Blue Jays in 2019 before he was traded to the Chicago Cubs. He posted a 3.41 ERA that season but followed it up with a 6.53 ERA over 22 appearances between the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies in 2020.

Phelps owns a 3.98 FIP over eight years in the majors. He posted a career-best 13.5 K/9 last season.

To make room on the roster, the Blue Jays designated outfielder Derek Fisher for assignment. Toronto acquired Fisher in the deal that sent Aaron Sanchez to the Houston Astros in July 2019. He hit .177/.295/.395 with seven homers in 56 games with the Jays.
