The New York Mets added a big arm to their bullpen, as they signed free-agent right-hander Trevor May to a two-year contract.
The deal is worth $15.5 million, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. It also contains $250,000 worth of performance bonuses annually.
May, 31, became a critical member of the Minnesota Twins' bullpen after missing all of 2017 recovering from Tommy John surgery. Since returning in 2018, he's crafted a 3.19 ERA (140 ERA+), 3.56 FIP, and 1.08 WHIP with 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings and just 17 home runs allowed.
He appeared in 24 games for Minnesota last season, posting a 3.86 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 14.7 strikeouts per nine and two saves.
May will slot nicely into a Mets bullpen that was among the poorer relief units in baseball last year. He could serve as a key arm in the mid-to-late innings alongside Dellin Betances, Brad Brach, and Edwin Diaz. New York added right-handers Jacob Barnes and Nick Tropeano via waivers earlier this winter.
May represents the team's first major addition under new owner Steve Cohen, who purchased the team in November.
