San Diego Padres starter Mike Clevinger will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday and is expected to miss all of next season, the team announced.

This will be Clevinger's second time undergoing Tommy John surgery after also doing so as a prospect.

The Padres also signed Clevinger on Monday to a two-year extension that covers his final two years of arbitration.

Clevinger's deal is worth $11.5 million, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. He'll earn $2 million while rehabbing this coming year, and then a base salary of $6.5 million in 2022, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

The contract also contains a $3-million signing bonus that will be deferred, along with performance bonuses in the second year, Cassavell adds.

Clevinger suffered a right elbow sprain in one of his final regular-season starts. He was deemed healthy enough to make a start in the National League Division Series but was pulled after just 24 pitches and eventually removed from the Padres' playoff roster due to recurring elbow issues.

Padres general manager AJ Preller said he doesn't think the playoff start is the reason Clevinger needs surgery, according to Darnay Tripp of NBC San Diego.

San Diego acquired Clevinger from the Cleveland Indians at this year's trade deadline for a six-player package that included youngsters Josh Naylor and Cal Quantrill. He was effective in San Diego before the injury, crafting a 2.84 ERA and 0.89 WHIP over four starts with 19 strikeouts and one shutout.

"We don't feel like it was anything he had when he showed up," Preller said when asked if Clevinger was hurt at the time of the trade, according to Judson Richards of Xtra 1360. "We're not looking for any bailout."

The 29-year-old owns a career 3.19 ERA, 3.53 FIP, and 1.19 WHIP with 603 strikeouts over five big-league seasons with the Padres and Indians.
