Astros' Gurriel signs 1-year extension reportedly worth $7M

The Houston Astros signed infielder Yuli Gurriel to a one-year contract extension Tuesday, hours before Game 1 of their wild-card series game against the Minnesota Twins, the team announced.

Gurriel's extension is worth $7 million guaranteed and includes an $8-million team option for 2022 with a $500,000 buyout, a source told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

The 36-year-old's deal also includes a number of incentives, such as: $250,000 each for 300 and 350 plate appearances, $350,000 each for 400 and 450 plate appearances, and $400,000 each for 500 and 550 plate appearances, Rosenthal adds.

He could also earn $2 million in award bonuses.

Gurriel had a down year for the Astros, hitting .232/.274/.384 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 57 games.

He posted an .884 OPS with 31 homers, 40 doubles, and 104 RBIs in 2019.
