Athletics' Chapman to undergo season-ending hip surgery
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday and will undergo surgery Monday, the team announced.
The surgery will repair a torn hip labrum, Chapman's agent, Scott Boras, told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. He'll miss the rest of this season but is expected to return to full strength after an estimated 12-16 week rehab period.
"It was caught early, and it's not at all career-threatening," Boras told Slusser.
The 27-year-old hasn't played since Sept. 6, when he aggravated the ailing hip. He hit .232/.276/.535 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs in 37 games.
An All-Star for the first time in 2019, Chapman's quickly become one of the best defensive players in baseball, recording 64 defensive runs saved across 2018 and 2019.
Oakland heads into Saturday's action sitting atop the American League with a 28-15 record. Chad Pinder and Vimael Machin are expected to platoon at third in Chapman's absence.
