Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg will undergo season-ending surgery to alleviate carpal tunnel syndrome in his right hand, manager Dave Martinez announced, according to MLB.com's Jessica Camerato.
The Nationals placed Strasburg on the long-term injured list.
Strasburg signed a seven-year, $245-million deal with the Nationals after a regular season in which he went 18-6 with a 3.32 ERA in 209 innings and a strong playoff performance that earned him World Series MVP honors.
He made just two starts this season, though, and allowed six earned runs in five innings.
Right-hander Wil Crowe will take Strasburg's spot on the 40-man roster. Crowe will start Game 2 of the Nationals' doubleheader on Saturday against the Miami Marlins.
