Pirates place Evans on IL with reported broken jaw, concussion after collision

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed Phillip Evans on the 45-day injured list after the first baseman was stretchered off the field Saturday following a collision with teammate Gregory Polanco, the club announced Sunday.

Evans sustained a broken jaw and concussion after colliding with Polanco while chasing a foul ball in the sixth inning against the Detroit Tigers, sources told Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Evans won't likely need surgery but is unlikely to return in 2020 given the nature of his injury, reports Mackey.

The 27-year-old was slashing .359/.444/.487 with a home run and nine RBIs in 11 games before the injury.

The Pirates called up first baseman/outfielder Jose Osuna and left-hander Brandon Waddell to fill out the major-league roster. Right-hander Nick Mears was also optioned to the club's alternate training facility.
