Pirates' Archer out until 2021 after thoracic outlet surgery

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Chris Archer underwent surgery Tuesday to relieve symptoms related to thoracic outlet syndrome, the team announced Wednesday.

Archer, 31, will not pitch in 2020, but the club expects him to recover in time for the full 2021 season.

He has an $11-million team option for 2021 with a $250,000 buyout that would make him a free agent.

A two-time All-Star with the Tampa Bay Rays (2015, 2017), Archer is coming off his worst season in the majors, where he went 3-9 with a 5.19 ERA in 23 starts.

Many pitchers, including Matt Harvey and Phil Hughes (twice), have undergone surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in recent years.
