Fantasy: 5 offensive breakout candidates

Picking a position player that takes the next step and becomes an offensive star can make your fantasy season. With that in mind, the following five major leaguers should be targeted on draft day.

Average draft positions are from FantasyPros as of Feb. 26.

All stats for 2020 projections are from FanGraphs.

Cavan Biggio, Blue Jays - 2B, OF (ADP 138)

Teammates Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette are getting most of the attention even though Biggio finished ahead of the duo in AL Rookie of the Year voting last year. The 24-year-old second baseman posted a .793 OPS with 16 home runs and 14 stolen bases in just 100 contests. With enough at-bats, he could easily put together a 25-25 campaign (or perhaps even a 30-30 season) in 2020. It will help that Biggio should have plenty of protection around him in Guerrero and Bichette.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Blue Jays - OF, 2B (ADP 163)

The 26-year-old outfielder is going to put up All-Star numbers if he's healthy in 2020. The flashy Cuban posted an .819 OPS with 31 homers and 85 RBIs in 149 career games (almost the equivalent of one full season) across 2018 and 2019. Gurriel will bat third in a much-improved Blue Jays lineup, which means he should see a lot of pitches with Bichette and Biggio hitting before him and Guerrero slotting in after. Don't be surprised if Gurriel ends up being one of the steals of the fantasy season based on his ADP.

Kyle Tucker, Astros - OF (ADP 162)

The former top prospect will show this season why the Astros refused to include him in trade talks over the last few years. Tucker struggled immensely after debuting in 2018 but turned heads last year with a .269/.319/.537 slash line while notching four round-trippers and five stolen bases in just 67 at-bats. The 23-year-old could go deep 20-30 times and swipe 20-plus bags this season for a club that's oozing with talent.

Keston Hiura, Brewers - 2B (ADP 54)

The Brewers are going to need a lot from Hiura after losing Yasmani Grandal and Mike Moustakas in free agency. All indications are that the 23-year-old second baseman is more than ready to put up big numbers, and fantasy owners should be ready to pounce on him. Hiura accrued a .938 OPS while going deep 19 times with 49 RBIs and eight stolen bases in just 84 games during 2019. An All-Star appearance could be in his near future, especially with a healthy Christian Yelich providing lineup protection.

Dansby Swanson, Braves - SS (ADP 261)

The first overall pick in the 2015 draft could finally be ready to live up to his billing. Swanson, 26, has shown marginal improvements in every season since becoming a regular in 2017. He posted a pedestrian .748 OPS last year but also swatted 17 home runs with 65 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 127 contests. The talented shortstop is worth a bench spot on fantasy rosters given the largely underwhelming options around his ADP.
