The San Diego Padres' search for the first no-hitter in team history will continue.

Rookie right-hander Chris Paddack lost his no-hit bid against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday after infielder Starlin Castro hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Paddack still finished the night with eight strikeouts on 94 pitches over 7 2/3 innings. He's now 6-4 with a 2.70 ERA and 95 strikeouts over 90 innings of work through his first 16 starts as a big-leaguer.

"That shows you how hard it is," Paddack said of narrowly missing the no-no, according to Steven Wine of The Associated Press.

His skipper Andy Green was impressed by the young starter's composure.

"He looked really sharp from the get-go," Green said. "Nobody ever seemed on balance against him."

The Padres have never recorded a no-hitter across 8,071 games dating back to the club's inaugural season in 1969. The Montreal Expos also debuted in '69, but they notched their first no-hitter nine games into the team's existence against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Prior to 2012, the New York Mets were the only other team without a no-hitter, but that ended when Johan Santana navigated nine hitless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Marlins, who spoiled the Padres' chances Wednesday, have six no-hitters since their expansion season in 1993.

The Padres have come close often. Just last season, Tyson Ross and Jordan Lyles each carried no-hit bids into the eighth inning less than a month apart, and both attempts ended as one-hitters. In fact, San Diego has recorded a whopping 30 one-hitters in its history.

What's worse for Padres fans is the club has been on the losing end of 10 no-hitters, including Dock Ellis' famous LSD trip, A.J. Burnett's wild ride, and twice at the hands of Tim Lincecum. Most recently, the Los Angeles Dodgers used four pitchers to no-hit the Padres in Monterrey, Mexico on May 4, 2018.
