Scherzer to pitch day after suffering broken nose

Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer will pitch Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, one day after breaking his nose during batting practice.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Scherzer told him, "Expect me to pitch," according to Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post. Martinez also revealed that the six-time All-Star has a black right eye and that he isn't sure if he'll want to wear a mask on the mound.

The right-hander sustained the injury while attempting to lay down a bunt Tuesday. The baseball ended up hitting him in the face after deflecting off his bat and he subsequently left the field with the team's medical staff.

Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, has a 2.81 ERA with a career-high 12.3 K/9 rate in 15 starts for Washington this season.
