Report: Yankees continue to check in with Machado
As players begin to arrive for spring training, the New York Yankees are continuing to check in with free-agent infielder Manny Machado's camp, sources told SNY's Andy Martino.
The Yankees are not the front-runners to land Machado, adds Martino, who notes the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies have been more aggressive in pursuit of the seven-year veteran.
Chicago reportedly discussed a long-term deal with Machado that included a club option and, according to Martino's sources, had an average annual value of more than $31 million. Multiple reports earlier in the offseason put the White Sox offer somewhere in the range of $175 million-$250 million.
New York's current offer to Machado is "low" compared to what he is seeking, a person close to the player told Martino.
If the Yankees were to acquire the infielder, he wouldn't be in consideration to play shortstop. That job will belong to Troy Tulowitzki if he's healthy, sources told Martino, but the Yankees apparently would be comfortable moving third baseman Miguel Andujar across the diamond to first base if Machado joined New York.
The Yankees have been mentioned as a possible suitor for Machado since early November. The 26-year-old reportedly expressed a desire to join the team and seems to have support from his wife, Yainee, who is apparently enamored with New York City.
Machado is coming off an All-Star campaign in 2018 where he hit .297/.367/.538 with 37 home runs and 107 RBIs while splitting time between the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers.
