The San Diego Padres are looking to acquire one of baseball's most versatile players.

San Diego is interested in signing free agent Marwin Gonzalez to play shortstop, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Gonzalez, 29, has appeared at every infield position - aside from pitcher and catcher - during his career and played the majority of his games last season in left field for the Houston Astros, but San Diego has a void at shortstop with Freddy Galvis hitting free agency.

The Padres have prospect Luis Urias in their pipeline, but he's expected to play second base for the big club.

Along with the Padres, the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, and Angels are all believed to be potential landing spots for Gonzalez, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports.

After a 2017 campaign in which he posted a .907 OPS in 134 games, Gonzalez regressed last season, hitting .247/.324/.409 with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs in 145 games.
