Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich was named the 2018 National League MVP on Thursday, beating out finalists Javier Baez and Nolan Arenado.
Yelich received 29 of 30 first-place votes.
"If I knew that was going to happen I would have been a lot less nervous than I was," Yelich said, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.
PLAYER | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | POINTS |
---|---|---|---|---|
Christian Yelich | 29 | 1 | 0 | 415 |
Javier Baez | 0 | 19 | 4 | 250 |
Nolan Arenado | 0 | 3 | 8 | 203 |
This is the fourth time a Brewers player has been honored as MVP. Yelich joins Ryan Braun (2011) and Robin Yount (1982, 1989).
Yelich is the ninth player - and second in the NL - to be named MVP in his first season with a team after being traded, according to the BBWAA. He was acquired from the Miami Marlins in January 2018.
The 26-year-old won the NL batting title in 2018 after hitting .326/.402/.598 with 36 home runs, 34 doubles, and 110 RBIs.
New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom, who finished fifth in the voting, received the other first-place nod.
