Report: Mets checked in on Ramos, Maldonado

The New York Mets are in pursuit of a catcher ahead of the 2019 season and they're showing interest in a number of candidates.

One day after a report claimed the Mets were among the teams interested in Yasmani Grandal, Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports reports that they've also checked in on free agents Wilson Ramos and Martin Maldonado.

A revolving door of Mets catchers combined to hit .208/.297/.355 in 2018 and Travis d'Arnaud is expected to miss the first few months of next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery this past April.

Ramos had a great season at the plate last year, hitting .306/.358/.487 with 15 home runs and 70 RBIs in 111 games split between the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies.

The Mets should have plenty of competition for Ramos' services, with five teams showing interest in the 31-year-old, according to Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times.

Maldonado completed last season with the Houston Astros, appearing in 41 games for them after he was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels in a July trade.

The 2017 Gold Glove winner is a career .220 hitter, but he's well regarded for his defense, finishing third among qualified catchers in defensive rating (11.3) in 2018, according to FanGraphs.
