Boone regrets not pulling Severino earlier in Game 3 of ALDS

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was heavily criticized for leaving starter Luis Severino in for too long during Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Boston Red Sox. During a press conference Friday, Boone admitted it was a mistake.

"I should've had him out of there," Boone said. "Because I sensed that he wasn't on top of his game. I felt like they were having a lot of good swings against him, and I probably got a little greedy there thinking he could get through the bottom of the order there in the fourth."

Severino allowed three runs through his first three innings before the Red Sox blew the game open in the fourth frame.

The right-hander gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases before getting yanked. Lance Lynn came in and walked in a run before allowing a bases-clearing double. His replacement, Chad Green, didn't fare much better, allowing a single and a triple before escaping the nightmare. The Red Sox batted around, scoring seven in the inning, and went on to win 16-1.

Part of Boone's reasoning for leaving Severino in stemmed from the Yankees' "leverage guys" in the bullpen not being "quite as well-rested."
