Indians' Martin to be released from hospital after near-fatal infection
Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin is scheduled to be released from a hospital on Sunday after recovering from a near-fatal bacterial infection, the team announced.
Martin's life was in jeopardy before treatment at the Cleveland Clinic helped him recover from toxins that entered his blood stream and affected the functioning of his internal organs.
"It's beyond a relief," Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti told MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.
Martin is itching to get back to the team, Antonetti said, according to The Athletic's Zack Meisel. Because there is no precedent for how he'll get back in playing shape, the Indians haven't provided a timetable for Martin's potential return.
The 30-year-old outfielder was acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the non-waiver trade deadline, appearing in six games before the illness struck.
