Report: Adam Jones clears waivers, eligible to be traded
The Baltimore Orioles appeared to have a deal in place to send franchise stalwart Adam Jones to the Philadelphia Phillies before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but the veteran used his 10-and-5 rights to veto the move.
Now, it appears the Orioles might have another shot at dealing the 33-year-old.
Jones has cleared waivers and is eligible to be traded, sources told Fancred's Jon Heyman, while adding that the outfielder might be more likely to consider a move to an American League team.
Heyman also reported that Baltimore recently approached the Yankees - who've lost multiple right-handed bats, including Aaron Judge, due to injury - about a potential trade for Jones, but that New York is approaching the luxury tax and may want to retain financial wiggle room. Jones is in the final year of a contract that pays him $17 million this season.
A friend of Jones also suggested to Heyman that the longtime Orioles superstar may not want to leave Baltimore because of his family, friends, fans and charity.
Jones is hitting .285/.317/.438 with 13 home runs, 31 doubles, and 49 RBIs in 2018, and is set to become a free agent at season's end.
