The New York Yankees might be interested in trading for one of either Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard, according to reports, but they appear to have their eye on another member of the Mets' starting staff, too.

The Yankees have recently inquired about 28-year-old right-hander Zack Wheeler, according to The Athletic's Marc Carig.

With Jordan Montgomery lost for the season and Sonny Gray struggling, the Yankees have made it clear they're interested in acquiring a starting pitcher before July's trade deadline.

New York could just be doing its due diligence, as Carig speculates, because it has also been linked to other starters such as J.A. Happ, Michael Fulmer, Kevin Gausman, Nathan Eovaldi, and was reportedly notified by the San Francisco Giants that Jeff Samardzija was available.

Wheeler owns a 23-29 record with a 4.01 ERA in 471 1/3 career innings, all with the Mets. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2015 and did not pitch for a two-year stretch prior to the 2017 campaign.
