Boone: Sanchez likely heading to DL, to undergo MRI on hip, groin

While the New York Yankees wait for MRI results on Gary Sanchez, manager Aaron Boone said his star catcher will "probably" hit the disabled list after leaving Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The 25-year-old Sanchez was removed from the contest after injuring himself while attempting to beat out a double play in the 10th inning. He was replaced defensively by Austin Romine in the bottom of the frame and is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his groin and hip abductor on Monday. Results of the MRI will yield a more clear diagnosis, Boone said, while conceding that "it's probably a DL situation."

While they wait for the results, the Yankees will call up backstop Kyle Higashioka, Boone added following Sunday's 7-6 defeat at Tropicana Field.

Through 63 games this season, Sanchez owns a .194/.292/.441 slash line with 14 home runs. In the most recent American League All-Star balloting update, the Yankees catcher ranked second in fan voting behind Rays backstop Wilson Ramos.
