The Washington Nationals acquired hard-throwing reliever Kelvin Herrera from the Kansas City Royals on Monday night for a package of prospects, but it appears like they weren't the only interested suitors.

Both the Los Angeles Angels and Dodgers were in serious talks with the Kansas City Royals about the two-time All-Star right-hander before the Nationals ultimately won the bidding, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports reports.

The Angels remain immersed in trade discussions regarding pitching with multiple teams, according to Nightengale, with their sights set on the postseason.

"It's a responsibility that myself and my staff take very seriously," Angels GM Billy Eppler said about getting his team into the postseason.

The Dodgers, who had one of the best bullpens in the NL last season en route to a World Series appearance, haven't received the same effectiveness this year, which may have spawned their interest in Herrera.

It's fair to assume the Dodgers, like the Angels, will continue to discuss pitching with teams as they look to stay in the running for another division title in the NL West.
