Cards' Wainwright pulled epic mid-game prank on Padres coach Schumaker

St. Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright is unable to pitch these days, as he's on the 60-day disabled list with an elbow issue. But he's keeping himself busy in other ways, like pulling off pranks on some of his buddies.

Wainwright managed to pull one over on San Diego Padres first base coach Skip Schumaker - a former Cardinals teammate and one of his best friends - while the teams were playing each other this week. His prank was apparently payback for an incident during the Cardinals' visit to San Diego earlier this year, when Schumaker had a large room-service order delivered to Wainwright's hotel room in the wee hours of the morning.

As the teams were battling on the field in St. Louis on Wednesday, Wainwright managed to get Schumaker's street clothes smuggled across the hall to the Cardinals' clubhouse for some additional tailoring. When Schumaker went to get dressed following the game, he found that his white button-down shirt now featured "Wainwright 50" and an authentic MLB logo ironed onto the back. The number 50 had also been permanently etched onto the rear end of his pants.

Finally, Wainwright left his stamp on the whole thing by autographing Schumaker's new "jersey" with a message that read in part: "Now we're even."

"This is a good one," Schumaker said of the prank, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I'm impressed. It's really - really - good."

The Cardinals and Padres aren't scheduled to play each other again until 2019, but Schumaker might not be intent on waiting another year to have his revenge on Wainwright.

"Should be fun," Schumaker said. "He'll be on red alert. High alert for the (rest of the) season."
